About the desk

Numix is a small independent desk writing about the Linux desktop, open-source software, hardware that has to keep working, and the parts of everyday computing that vendor documentation explains badly or not at all.

What we publish

Every article here starts from a question somebody actually asks: why does this application ignore my theme, how long is this release supported, what does this certificate field mean, is this upgrade worth the money. We answer it in full — the numbers, the commands, the edge cases and the point at which the answer changes — rather than restating a manual.

We write for the reader who has already tried the obvious thing. That means naming the failure mode, saying which check rules it out, and being explicit about what we could not verify.

What we are not

This publication is not connected with the open-source Numix Project that published icon and desktop themes under a similar name. We are not its successor, we do not speak for it, we do not distribute its work, and we use none of its marks, artwork or code. The name here comes from the domain and nothing else. If you are looking for that project’s repositories, they are not hosted at this address.

We also do not sell software, take donations, or run a support channel.

How the desk is funded

The site carries sponsored placements, which are labelled and kept separate from editorial articles. Sponsors have no say in what the editorial sections cover or conclude. Terms are on the placement page.
